Terra

Terra, a powerful magic user with a mysterious past. Once enslaved by the Empire, she has no idea who she is. On her quest for the truth and answers about her identity, she begins to realize she doesn't know what love is. She's had no true friends until she met up with the Returners, and she yearns to discover love.

 
 

Locke

He won't admit it, but at times Locke uses his skills for theft as opposed to 'treasure hunting'. He prefers to be considered a merchant and called a treasure hunter, easily intimidated by anyone who refers to him as a thief. His first meeting with Terra brings back the pains of a lost love and he vows to keep her safe until her memory returns.

Edgar

Along with being a master mechanic and a king, Edgar is a self-proclaimed ladies man. He's wowed most of the ladies he's met, though with the exception of Terra. As the king of Figaro, his castle is equipped with powerful engines that enable it to burrow underground and move to another location. He pretends to be an Imperial supporter, but is actually in league with the resistance group the Returners.

 
 

Sabin

Sabin, a master martial artist, is Edgar's twin brother. When their father died, Sabin left Figaro and gave up the throne for his own freedom. He studied under the martial arts master Duncan, mastering Blitz skills. He joins the party while searching for Vargas, a student who killed Duncan out of jealousy thinking Duncan had chosen Sabin to succeed him.

Celes

Fused with the ability to use magic while she was young, Celes is the only character opposite Terra who can use magic without having to learn from Magicite. A former Imperial general, Celes was branded as a traitor after doubting the Empire's ways. Locke discovers her being kept captive deep in South Figaro and together they break free. Though she considers herself a soldier and not a "love starved twit", she eventually develops feelings for Locke.

 
 

Shadow

A skilled mercenary who will do anything for money, Shadow is haunted by dreams of a past life as a thief. His only friend is his faithful dog, Interceptor. Interceptor takes on an unusual liking to Relm, who has some unknown relation to Shadow. A ring, a memento of Relm's departed mother, can also be used by Shadow. The connection between them remains unknown.

Cyan

Despite his age, Cyan is an extremely skilled and powerful swordsman. Retainer to the kingdom of Doma, poisoned and destroyed by Kefka. As one of the few survivors, he witnessed the death of his family and blamed it upon himself for not being able to save them. In a blind rage, he attacked a nearby Imperial base alone, killing several Imperial soldiers. He joins the party to embrace Kefka's demise.

 
 

Gau

Abandoned to the wilds of the Veldt while he was young, Gau has lived amongst the wild monsters as far as he can remember. While travelling across the Veldt to Mobliz, Sabin and Cyan meet the wild child roaming amongst the monsters asking for some food. Dried Meat, bought in Mobliz satisfies Gau's hunger and he decides to return the favor by showing them a mask that will let them breathe underwater and cross through the Serpent Trench to Nikeah.

Setzer

A gambler with a taste for taking chances and classy opera, Setzer had his sights on marrying the opera house diva Maria. Instead, he ended up meeting Celes Chere and her friends with the intent of using his airship to get to the Imperial capital of Vector. After losing a bet with Celes, he agrees to take them to the Imperial capital, but decides not to join the party. After the Vector ordeal he realizes the destruction and chaos caused by the Empire threatens the world and joins the party to scenter the Imperials.

 
 

Strago

Living in the small town of Thamasa, Strago is one of the last decendants of powerful Blue magic users. The party rescues his granddaughter Relm from a burning building, and he insists on repaying them by joining their party and fighting for their cause.

Relm

Relm's artistic ability is nothing short of amazing. Her pictures are so real they actually spring to life! Despite her grandfather Strago's order that she's not to join the party, she tags behind anyways, saving the party from an encounter with Ultros. She's a pretty rude kid and calls Strago an old fuddy duddy. She loves Shadow's dog Interceptor, and has an unknown connection to Shadow himself.

 
 

Mog

Mog's one cool Moogle. He's held hostage in Narshe by Lone Wolf, a pickpocket. When rescued by the party, he tells them that the Esper Ramuh came to him in a dream telling him that the party was coming his way. Not giving them a choice, Mog tells them he's gonna join their party and walks off to the airship.
